Bags are commonplace and useful for everyone.  They come in a variety of styles, sizes, and materials.  A bag I consider very important is the purse aka handbag or pocketbook.

It's important to note that these terms can sometimes overlap, and different manufacturers or brands may use them interchangeably or assign their own specific meanings to the names. When shopping for a bag, it's advisable to consider the specific features, dimensions, and design elements of the bag rather than relying solely on the name or label.

The terms "purse," "pocketbook," and "handbag" are often used interchangeably, but there can be some subtle differences in their usage depending on regional preferences and individual interpretations.

Here are some general distinctions that can help differentiate between them:

Handbag: A handbag is typically a small or medium-sized bag carried The Canvas Satchel Handbag

by women to hold personal items such as a wallet, keys, cosmetics, and other small essentials. Handbags are often designed to be held in the hand or worn on the forearm. They may come with a short strap or handle for easy carrying.  Handbags are commonly used for formal or semi-formal occasions or as an accessory to complement an outfit.

Pocketbook: The term "pocketbook" is often used synonymously with "purse" in certain regions, particularly in North America. Historically, a pocketbook referred to a small bag that could be carried in a pocket, but over time it has evolved to mean a small handbag or purse. The usage of "pocketbook" can vary, and it may be more prevalent in specific areas or among certain generations.

Purse: A purse is a more general term that encompasses a broader range of bag styles and sizes. Purses can vary in size from small to large and often have multiple compartments or pockets for organization. They are designed to carry more items than a handbag and typically come with longer straps or handles, allowing them to be worn on the shoulder or across the body. Purses are often used for everyday purposes and can be more utilitarian in nature.

It's important to note that these terms can be subjective, and their usage may differ based on individual preferences, cultural norms, and regional variations. In some cases, the terms purse, pocketbook, and handbag may be used interchangeably, while in other instances, there may be subtle distinctions in their meaning.

I grew up in a diverse family that originated from several geographical regions of the United States.  Family from the east use the phrase pocketbook.  Those from the Midwest say purse.  While those from the south and west swing between handbag and pocketbook.
